Cazeneuve, more than 120 years of French turning expertise

TLDR: Cazeneuve (founded in 1905, France) is a major French designer and manufacturer of lathes and milling machines, whose famous HB conventional lathes sold in the thousands worldwide, before the range evolved towards the OPTIMAX CNC lathes.

Since 1905, Cazeneuve has established itself as a major French designer and manufacturer of lathes and milling machines, with a history spanning more than a century of innovation. The HB conventional lathes, iconic models of the brand, sold in the thousands all over the world, with one widely recognised technical feature: the eccentric quill, allowing fine diameter adjustment when setting bearing clearance. Acquired by the Thollon family in 1980, the manufacturer moved its range towards numerically assisted lathes (OPTICA, then OPTIMAX), while retaining the robust French build tradition, now paired with modern Siemens numerical controls.

A range of robust spindles, from the HB conventional lathe to the OPTIMAX CNC lathe

TLDR: Historic Cazeneuve HB series lathes feature an eccentric-quill spindle, with rotation speeds of up to 3,200 rpm depending on the model, while the current OPTIMAX CNC range retains that mechanical rigidity paired with modern controls.

Cazeneuve HB series conventional lathes (HB 500, HB 575, HB 725) feature an eccentric-quill spindle, a technical specificity of the manufacturer allowing fine diameter adjustment, where one millimetre of screw travel changes the diameter by only a few hundredths. These spindles, driven by 12 to 25 hp motors depending on the model, deliver rotation speeds of up to 3,200 rpm on the HB 500, 2,500 rpm on the HB 575 and 2,000 rpm on the HB 725. On the current OPTIMAX CNC lathes, motor power and spindle rigidity — provided by a generously sized monobloc cast-iron frame — allow high stock removal while guaranteeing exceptional stability for machining one-off parts and high-precision prototypes.
