ELB-Schliff, nearly a century of German surface and profile grinding

TLDR: ELB-Kehren GmbH (formerly ELB-Schliff Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH), founded by Edmund Lang in Babenhausen — hence the name ELB-Schliff — has been building "100% Made in Germany" surface and profile grinding machines for nearly 100 years, and is today associated with ABA Grinding Technologies within the Precision Surfacing Solutions alliance.

Founded by Edmund Lang in the town of Babenhausen, which gave rise to the name "ELB-Schliff", the company — today ELB-Kehren GmbH — has been producing surface and profile grinding machines for more than 70 years. Based in Aschaffenburg, it builds "100% Made in Germany" grinding machines for the automotive and aerospace sectors and other key industrial customers worldwide, with development now focused on multi-axis process machines. ELB-Schliff and ABA Grinding Technologies (founded in 1898 as Messwerkzeugfabrik Alig & Baumgärtel Aschaffenburg) are part of the Precision Surfacing Solutions alliance, recognised worldwide in surface, profile and deep-cut grinding (creep-feed grinding).

A range of horizontal spindles for surface, profile and creep-feed grinding

TLDR: ELB-Schliff grinding machines cover a wide range of spindle power ratings, from historic 2.5 kW horizontal-spindle models (1,430/2,900 rpm) up to high-power profile machines for aerospace (microCut series) reaching 52 kW.

On the historic ELB surface grinders (SW series), the horizontal grinding spindle, driven by a 2.5 kW motor, offers a speed adjustable between 1,430 and 2,900 rpm, for 250 mm diameter wheels. On the modern machines dedicated to profile and creep-feed grinding for the turbine industry (microCut series), the modular column design allows configuration into cost-effective production cells, with special models whose spindle power reaches 52 kW. Wheel dressing can be carried out on the table with a roller dressing unit or by interpolating the infeed and cross axes, for high-precision applications as well as high-volume grinding.

ELB-Schliff spindles and motor spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Historic horizontal surface grinding spindles, SW series (1,430/2,900 rpm)
  • Profile and creep-feed grinding spindles, up to 52 kW, microCut series
  • Spindles associated with indexed tables for loading and unloading in hidden cycle time
  • Spindles of electromagnetic-table grinders, SWBD series
  • Spindles of recent multi-axis CNC grinding machines
