Hembrug, historic Dutch reference in ultra-precision hard turning

TLDR: Hembrug, founded by the Dutch government under the name Artillerie Inrichtingen (A.I.) to produce ammunition, developed its own machine tools before selling them for civil use, becoming a world reference in hard turning with its fully hydrostatic Mikroturn series lathes, today part of the Danobat group.

Founded by the Dutch government under the name Artillerie Inrichtingen (A.I.) to produce ammunition, the company developed and produced in house the machine tools needed for its manufacturing, notably specific lathes, before beginning to sell its machines to other companies for civil purposes. Hembrug notably developed the first lathe with a hydrostatic main spindle for manufacturing memory discs, an application requiring an extremely fine surface finish. Today a member of the Danobat group, Hembrug designs and manufactures the Mikroturn series, unique fully hydrostatic hard turning machines of high quality and ultra-precision, able to achieve form and dimensional accuracies between 0.1 and 2 microns, with surface finishes of 0.1 to 0.4 Ra on parts hardened up to 68 HRC — performance that often allows a traditional cylindrical grinding operation to be replaced by a single turning operation.

A range of hydrostatic spindles, guaranteed runout below 0.1 micron

TLDR: Mikroturn machines use a high-precision hydrostatic spindle with guaranteed runout of 0.1 micron or better, mounted on a natural granite base that is inherently temperature stable, with hydrostatic slideways offering 1 micron positioning and 0.2 micron repeatability.

On Mikroturn hard turning machines, the high-precision hydrostatic spindle offers guaranteed runout of 0.1 micron or better, with high dynamic stiffness ensuring excellent accuracy and remarkable tool life. All elements essential to accuracy are mounted on a natural granite base, inherently temperature stable and vibration damping, with vibration absorbing supports that isolate the granite base from the machine's metal frame — with no corrosion and no tension stress. The high-precision hydrostatic slideways offer 1 micron positioning and 0.2 micron repeatability, controlled by linear scales. Heat sources and vibrating elements are placed outside the machining area, guaranteeing excellent thermal stability during series production — characteristics that explain why the accuracies achieved last more than 25 years on these machines.

Hembrug spindles and motor spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • High-precision hydrostatic spindles, guaranteed runout ≤ 0.1 µm, Mikroturn series
  • Spindles mounted on a temperature-stable natural granite base
  • Associated hydrostatic slideways, 1 µm positioning, 0.2 µm repeatability
  • Spindles of horizontal hard turning lathes, for roller screws, punches and dies
  • Spindles of historic lathes (DR1S series and earlier models)

Interfaces and specifications

The Hembrug spindles and motor spindles we repair offer guaranteed runout of 0.1 micron or better, with associated hydrostatic slideways offering 0.2 micron repeatability — exact specifications to be confirmed on quotation according to the reference of your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair Hembrug hydrostatic spindles (runout ≤ 0.1 µm)?

Yes, we work on these spindles, taking account of their extreme accuracy requirements.

Do you work on the hydrostatic slideways associated with Mikroturn spindles?

Yes, we diagnose and repair these systems, preserving their 0.2 micron repeatability.

How long does a full overhaul take?

Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts specific to this hydrostatic technology.

Do you work on historic Hembrug lathes (DR1S series) still in production?

Yes, we diagnose and repair the spindles whatever the age of the machine.

Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Hembrug machines?

Yes, we set up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to the criticality of this very high precision equipment.
