Johnford (Roundtop Machinery), a Taiwanese manufacturer since 1979

TLDR: Johnford, a brand of Roundtop Machinery Industries (Taiwan, founded 1979/1984), covers a broad range of made-to-order machine tools: twin-spindle/twin-turret slant-bed lathes, vertical lathes up to Ø6,000 mm, horizontal boring mills, bridge-type milling machines and double-column machining centres.

Founded in 1979 (Roundtop Machinery Industries, listed on the Taiwan stock exchange since 2001), the Johnford brand has offered vertical CNC lathes, horizontal machining centres, double-column machining centres, CNC flat-bed lathes and CNC forming and threading machines since 1992. The range covers slant-bed lathes (SL and HT series) with varied accessories (sub-spindles, live tooling turrets, steady rests), vertical lathes from Ø600 to Ø6,000 mm that can include a hydrostatic rotary table, as well as double-column machining centres whose X-axis travel ranges from 900 to 8,000 mm depending on the model. Johnford serves demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace and general manufacturing.

A range of robust spindles, from the twin-spindle lathe to the double-column centre

TLDR: Johnford HT series lathes use twin spindles and twin turrets for high-efficiency cutting, with a 25 hp spindle motor and a two-range gearbox on SL series slant-bed lathes, while vertical centres offer BT-40 spindles up to 8,000 rpm.

Johnford SL series slant-bed lathes, in Meehanite cast iron, make full use of a 25 hp spindle motor combined with a two-range gearbox, with a torque tube running through the 45° slant bed for extreme rigidity and excellent heat dissipation. On the HT series, twin spindles and twin turrets allow high-efficiency, high-productivity cutting, with a sub-spindle or secondary spindle available as an option and a free 360° B axis for tapping and angular drilling on certain models. Johnford vertical machining centres (JET series) use BT-40 taper spindles, typically running at 8,000 rpm, with X-axis travels from 850 to 3,000 mm. Vertical lathes, for their part, can be fitted with a hydrostatic rotary table on the heaviest configurations.

Johnford spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Spindles and sub-spindles of twin-spindle/twin-turret slant-bed lathes, HT series
  • Two-range gearbox spindles, SL series slant-bed lathes
  • BT-40 spindles, JET series vertical machining centres, up to 8,000 rpm
  • Spindles of vertical lathes (Ø600 to Ø6,000 mm) with hydrostatic rotary table
  • Spindles of double-column machining centres, boring mills and bridge-type milling machines

Interfaces and specifications

BT-40
8,000 rpm

The Johnford spindles and motor spindles we repair mainly use a BT-40 interface on vertical machining centres, with rotation speeds typically around 8,000 rpm, and twin-spindle/twin-turret configurations with a two-range gearbox on slant-bed lathes.
