Landis, more than a century of cylindrical and crankshaft grinding

TLDR: Landis Tool Co. (Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, United States, founded in the early twentieth century) is a historic manufacturer of internal cylindrical grinders and crankshaft grinders, today part of the French Fives group under the Fives Landis entity, specialising in high-precision grinding for the automotive industry.

As early as 1913, Landis Tool Co. was offering internal grinding machines for straight and taper grinding, as well as crankshaft grinders designed for petrol engines and small steam engines. Since joining the French Fives group, under the Fives Landis entity, the manufacturer has remained a benchmark for high-volume crankshaft and camshaft grinding, with ranges such as the compact and reliable LT1e and the LUND, dedicated to the final grinding of crankshaft journals. These machines equip very high output automotive production lines, where precision and repeatability are essential to engine quality.

A range of hydrostatic and twin-spindle configurations for crankshaft and camshaft grinding

TLDR: Landis LT1e grinders use a fully hydrostatic spindle combined with linear motor technology, for reliable high-precision grinding of small crankshafts and camshafts, while LUND crankshaft grinders use two simultaneous spindles with continuous electronic wheel balancing.

The Landis LT1e grinder, designed for low-volume production of 4 or 6 cylinder camshafts, uses a fully hydrostatic spindle and a way system combined with linear motor technology, guaranteeing reliable high-precision grinding on concentric and non-concentric diameters, eccentrics, profiles, tapers, chamfers and faces. A swivelling wheelhead further optimises flexibility for complex applications. On Landis LUND crankshaft grinders, two spindles machine the crankshaft journals simultaneously on parts up to 680 mm long, with a high-quality steel machine body to avoid any unnecessary vibration, and wheels mounted under continuous electronic balancing (Marposs controller) for better durability and longer service life.

Landis spindles and motor spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Fully hydrostatic spindles, camshaft grinders, LT1e series
  • Simultaneous twin spindles for crankshaft grinding, LUND series
  • Spindles associated with linear motor technology
  • Spindles fitted with continuous electronic balancing (Marposs)
  • Spindles of historic Landis internal cylindrical grinders

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair the hydrostatic spindles of LT1e camshaft grinders?

Yes, we work on these spindles, taking into account their hydrostatic system and linear motor technology.

Do you work on the simultaneous twin spindles of LUND crankshaft grinders?

Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles, taking care to preserve their synchronisation.

What is the average lead time for a full overhaul?

Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).

Do you work on historic Landis grinders still in production?

Yes, we diagnose and repair the spindles whatever the age of the machine.

Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Landis machines?

Yes, we set up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production rate, particularly relevant for the automotive industry.
