Miyano, Japanese pioneer of the automatic lathe since 1948

TLDR: Miyano (founded in 1948, Japan) developed from its inception Japan's first cam-type automatic lathe, before becoming a global benchmark for the twin-spindle CNC fixed-headstock lathe, part of the Citizen group since 2010-2011 under the Citizen Machinery Miyano entity.

Founded in 1948, Miyano moved into the manufacture of automatic lathes from its inception, with the development of Japan's first cam-type automatic lathe (the AL-S25 model), a major advance for Japanese industry. Over the decades, the manufacturer refined its range by adopting NC and then CNC technologies, while retaining a strong identity around fixed-headstock lathes for the machining of bars and billets. In 2010, Miyano joined the Citizen group, giving rise the following year to Citizen Machinery Miyano, which consolidates the expertise of the two manufacturers while retaining the Miyano identity on the most demanding turning operations. Miyano lathes, in particular the twin-spindle, twin-turret BNJ and BNE series, today equip many bar-machining workshops in aerospace, medical and dental applications.

A range of high-rigidity spindles, the cornerstone of Miyano precision

TLDR: The high-rigidity spindle design is Miyano's technical signature, with thick walls and large-diameter bearings limiting deflection, combined with synchronised twin-spindle configurations for the simultaneous machining of both faces of the part.

The high-rigidity spindle design is presented by the manufacturer as the cornerstone of its machining precision: Miyano spindles, with thick walls and large-diameter bearings, minimise deflection during machining. On the twin-spindle BNJ series lathes, the main spindle and the sub-spindle work in concert — for example 6,000 rpm at 11 kW on the main spindle and 7,000 rpm at 5.5 kW on the sub-spindle of the BNJ-42SY3 model — to machine the front and back of the part in a single set-up, with no manual re-clamping. The higher-capacity BNE series lathes (up to 51 or 65 mm bar diameter) can integrate two Y axes to extend the possibilities of simultaneous machining. Some models also incorporate the patented superimposed-axis technology, allowing the Z1 axis of the main spindle to overlap the Z2 axis of the sub-spindle for independent and simultaneous operations on several tool stations.

Miyano spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • High-rigidity main spindles, thick walls and large-diameter bearings
  • Synchronised sub-spindles, BNJ and BNE series
  • Spindles for twin-spindle, twin-turret lathes with Y axis
  • Spindles for fixed-headstock lathes for machining bars and billets

Interfaces and specifications

The Miyano spindles we repair cover bar diameters from 42 to 80 mm depending on the series (BNJ, BNE, ABX), with rotation speeds typically between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm on the main spindle and the sub-spindle, for power ratings of 5.5 to 11 kW — specifications to be confirmed on quotation according to the exact reference of your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair the main spindles and sub-spindles of Miyano twin-spindle lathes (BNJ, BNE series)?

Yes, we work on both spindles of these configurations, taking care to preserve their synchronisation.

Do you work on spindles compatible with the superimposed-axis technology?

Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles taking account of their specific coordination requirements.

What is the average lead time for a full overhaul?

Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).

Do you work on the spindles of large-capacity fixed-headstock lathes (up to 80 mm)?

Yes, we cover the entire range, whatever the bar diameter being machined.

Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Miyano lathes?

Yes, we set up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production rate, particularly relevant for bar-machining workshops operating continuously.
