On the most advanced configurations derived from Naxos-Union technology (such as the VTC 315 DS), the machine concept is distinguished by a workhead at the top, a tailstock at the bottom, and two cross slides each carrying a wheel spindle with CBN-oriented drive power of 30 kW and cutting speeds of up to 150 m/s. Using two wheels drastically reduces grinding times: by grinding in climb and conventional directions, the force couples generated by the process cancel each other out, making friction drive of the crankshaft clamped between two centres possible. Two integrated dressing spindles, fitted with an acoustic sensor and running at 15,000 rpm, provide simultaneous dressing of the wheels, significantly reducing ancillary times. Longitudinal adjustment of the crankshaft is carried out by a swivelling longitudinal measuring probe, with diameter control by integrated measuring heads.
