Pfauter, the historic pioneer of gear hobbing

TLDR: Robert Hermann Pfauter, a German engineer, pioneered gear hobbing, a generating method that still carries his name in the industry today, alongside the competing rack-cutter (Sunderland) and shaper-cutter (Fellows) methods. The brand, now part of Gleason as Gleason-Pfauter, remains a benchmark in cylindrical gear cutting workshops.

The German engineer Robert Hermann Pfauter pioneered hobbing, a method in which each turn of the hob cuts one tooth, the gashes making up the cutter (typically 8 to 10) working in approach and withdrawal to produce around twenty chips of unequal size per revolution. The involute profile sought appears when the gashes lie in the plane perpendicular to the workpiece, generating on the part a helix comparable to a thread. The method, perpetuated today under the Gleason-Pfauter brand within the Gleason group, remains the most widely used process for cutting cylindrical gears.

A range of hob spindles for generating

TLDR: Pfauter hobbing machines use a hob spindle carrying the hob, which can reach 450 mm in length on large-capacity configurations, with rotation speeds starting at 250 rpm on the heaviest machines, working with a mechanical or numerical dividing head that synchronises workpiece rotation.

On Pfauter-type hobbing machines, the hob spindle carries the hob, whose rack-shaped profile theoretically meshes with the gear to be cut. On large-capacity configurations, hob spindle length can reach 450 mm, with rotation speeds starting at 250 rpm on the heaviest machines intended for massive parts (up to 1,600 mm in diameter and 12 tonnes). A precise kinematic chain, historically mechanical and then digitised on modern generations, synchronises the rotation of the hob spindle with that of the workpiece.

Pfauter spindles covered (non-exhaustive list)

  • Hob spindles, up to 450 mm in length
  • Spindles of large-capacity hobbing machines, workpieces up to 1,600 mm in diameter
  • Spindles synchronised with a mechanical or numerical dividing head
  • Spindles of generating machines for cylindrical gears
  • Spindles of historic Pfauter and Gleason-Pfauter machines, all generations

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair the hob spindles of Pfauter hobbing machines?

Yes, we work on these spindles, whatever the length or the capacity of the machine.

Do you work on historic Pfauter hobbing machines still in production?

Yes, we diagnose and repair the spindles whatever the age of the machine.

What is the average lead time for a full overhaul?

Allow around 20 working days in the workshop, depending on the condition of the spindle and the availability of parts (bearings, seals, specific components).

Do you work on the spindles of large-capacity hobbing machines (up to 1,600 mm in diameter)?

Yes, we diagnose and repair these spindles, sized for machining massive parts.

Do you offer a preventive maintenance contract for a fleet of Pfauter machines?

Yes, we draw up preventive maintenance programmes tailored to your production pace.
